The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has successfully gathered ample signatures to back an impeachment motion against President Mohamed Muizzu. Recent reports from local media sources indicate that the Opposition is gearing up to present this motion in Parliament, potentially jeopardizing President Muizzu’s position. This significant development unfolded shortly after a noteworthy incident in the parliamentary proceedings.

The MDP, which holds the majority in the Maldives’ opposition, has confirmed its ability to file a resolution seeking the removal of President Mohamed Muizzu. Information sourced from ANI and local media on Monday reveals that the party has effectively secured the necessary signatures for the impeachment resolution. According to The Sun, a total of thirty-four members, including both Democrats and MDP representatives, have expressed their support for the impeachment motion against the president.

Despite having obtained the requisite signatures, the MDP has not yet submitted the impeachment motion. An MDP lawmaker emphasized this point, stating, “Together with the Democrats, the MDP has secured enough signatures to support an impeachment motion. But they haven’t submitted it yet,” as reported by The Sun.

During the MDP’s parliamentary group meeting on Monday, a unanimous decision was reached to proceed with filing the impeachment motion. The party’s determination to pursue this course of action signals a significant development in the political landscape of the Maldives.
